The following audio clip is from Reed Cowan’s documentary, prior to the start of the interview. It, along with the accompanying signed release from the Senator is proof that Mr. Buttars lied on his blog. Among other things, at no point did Mr. Cowan assert that the Senator would be able to review the footage before release, either in the release form, or the footage. Good luck keeping your job Senator.

Position on Traditional Marriage

By Chris Buttars
State Senator: District 10
Sometime in January, I talked with Reed Cowan for over an hour. I felt it was a friendly interview and we covered a lot of ground.

Reed assured me that he would treat both sides of the issue fairly and that I would be treated fairly. He told me the interview would be public in about a year and I would be allowed to see his work and approve my part before he released it.

I took Reed at his word and am disappointed.

I believe traditional marriage is the foundation of our civilization and I’ll continue to support public policy that strengthens traditional marriage. I will also continue to oppose policy that undermines that foundation.

You can see that post on the Utah Senate’s Site.

Update: A good point was made by Curtis in the comments. I want to clarify that this post shows that Reed Cowen did not agree on the record to letting the Senator review the tape prior to release. I also would like to point out however that there are at least 2 eye-witnesses who can verify that no such promise was made verbally either prior to filming.

One of my very good friends followed up on one of the Senator’s claims he made during the interview. Big surprise, another huge lie! See the email below:

I live in Utah, and one of our state Senators (Chris Buttars) claims that The Boy Scouts of Canada has lost membership due to the allowance of gay leaders. I am a Gay Rights ally, and am appalled at his claim. Could you send me some information about this?

Thank you so much,

Subject: question

Good morning. There is absolutely no evidence to support this and I’m amazed the senator would make such a claim. Scouts Canada does not discriminate against potential members for reasons of sexual orientation. People of any race, culture, faith or sexual orientation are equally welcome to apply for membership.

Hope this answers your question.

Best wishes

  1. haha what a dirty ol’ bastard!

  2. […] those people are going to care that the premise of the blog post from Buttars is an outright lie? Eric Ethington posted some audio of Reed telling Buttars how the whole process works, and even mentioning July as […]

  3. Silly liberal, leftist pinkos! It’s not a sin when a Republican does it. That trick never works.

Eric, thanks for providing easy access to the proof of Buttars’ cowardice, dishonesty, and lack of worthiness to serve our state!

  5. Hate to play the devils advocate here (honestly I do), but you have not produced enough evidence to say that Buttars is a liar.

True, the waver and audio make no mention of Mr. Cowan stating that Buttars would be “treated fairly,” that “the interview would be public in about a year,” or that Buttars “would be allowed to see his work and approve his part before he released it.”

The only evidence confirmed in Buttars post was when he stated “Reed assured me that he would treat both sides of the issue fairly…” when Mr. Cowan sated “we are going to show all sides.”

In short, a verbal agreement could have been made well before the actual interview took place (or even before the microphones went hot) wherein Mr. Cowan assured Senator Buttars of the things he claims.

But, a verbal agreement is only worth the paper it is written on – the fact of the matter is that Buttars could be right, but we simply do not have any physical evidence to support it.

Thanks for your thoughts! I believe that the audio and then the release show simply the fact that Mr. Cowen did not claim that Buttars would have the option to review the tape before it was released, on the record. But in addition to that, there are at least 2 eye-witnesses in the room apart from Senator Buttars and Mr. Cowen, who can independantly confirm that no such agreement was made verbally either.

  6. Much better –

I have been reading to many bills and have developed an eye for pure A then B thinking!

The real question is where is the unedited source material and where is the full unedited transcript. One would think that getting a honest look at what the man say would be important. So why must it be only by edited sources we will be allowed to see what he says?

      Hey Kirk;

Remember that this press release by Mr. Cowen was meant as a preview of the documentary before it’s released in July. But I don’t think it really matters if it’s edited or not. Saying that homosexuals are the worst threat facing America today can’t really be taken out of context. Same with the “Pig Sex” comments, disease comments and many others.

  8. When are politicians, and people in general, going to learn that if you lie on a scale such as this, someone will catch you. The internet is full of people, on both sides of the isle, who are more than willing to prove you wrong.
    Chris Buttars must go!

  9. This was a pretty damning report filed by Utah’s Fox13:

Pretty much confirms everything Eric is suggesting here.

  10. Utah Sen. Chris Buttars has some very disturbing history as well.
He used to run a “Mormon faith based” “boys ranch” in Utah (he still sits on the board of directors) and there are MANY young men that claim the “boys ranch” was abusive both physically and mentally.
You can hear one of the boys talk about it on GayTalkRadio by visiting

Reed gave a phone interview about some of this today on X96’s Radio From Hell show.

Their shows are available as a free podcast through iTunes if anyone wants to hear it – probably about a third of the way into the show.

  12. Excellent site and I am really pleased to see you have what I am actually looking for here: this .. as it’s taken me literally 1 hours and 03 minutes of searching the web to find you (just kidding!) so I shall be pleased to become a regular visitor 🙂

HAA, I LOVE the one that says not enough proof was obtained to say that Buttars was not lieing, that is just another example of being blind to the obvious!!!!!!!!!!!
